    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2016/2016/01/28/donald-trump-president-election-odds/79481272/
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll also finds Americans divided about the need for a third party in this country. Fewer than a quarter say they’d even consider voting for Donald Trump as an independent candidate for president. With Trump as the GOP nominee vs. Clinton, 54 percent of Americans say they’d expect Clinton to win. Leaned Republicans are about as confident that Trump would beat Clinton (75 percent) as are leaned Democrats that Clinton would beat Trump (78 percent). Still, there are sharp divisions in expectations for Trump among leaned Republicans, reflecting the party’s polarization. There also are substantial differences by education. Among those with college degrees, Clinton and Sanders clearly outpace the GOP competition. Those without a college degree have similar expectations about the chances of Cruz and Rubio, but are substantially more bullish on Trump, reflecting in part his strength in this group. Trump is priced at around 3-to-1 and is second favorite to replace Barack Obama as president, with Hilary Clinton the favorite at .88-to-1 with theLadbrokes betting company. Late last year, Trump could be backed at 4-to-1 or better to become president. However, as Trump's campaign has shown few signs of losing momentum, the odds have shortened, while the endorsement of the real estate and business mogul by Sarah Palin was also seen as a boost in the gambling market. American oddsmakers are forbidden from offering prices on elections, but the interest in Britain has dwarfed that of any previous political event. Much of that has to do with Trump and his polarizing campaign.
These articles reflect our unit in some ways. In our presidency unit we learned that the president has formal and informal powers. They use different views like attitudinal and representational views. In this case Donald Trump isn't president, but as a candidate, he is using representational views to please his supporters in order to gain his spot in the election. Donald Trump is using his powers to gain votes on his nomination. He has support from many of his people. People like Sarah Palin are providing funds to help support his campaign. He appeals to a decent amount of the nation because of his use of speech and how he represents himself and the country. He uses the needs of people and incorporates it in his campaign so that people are content and agree with his ideas.

  2. Presidency-Electoral College

The election of a new president is coming closer and closer. As they close in, we heard more and more about the candidates and the Electoral College. The topic of these two articles is about Ted Cruz and his apology to his “offensive comments” about New Yorkers. Cruz recently allegedly criticized New Yorker values. Then, the following people demanded an apology from Cruz: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City. These are all of whom felt the need for Cruz to apologize, unsure if the apology would be directed towards themselves or the New Yorker. As a result, in Cruz’s apology, Cruz apologized for the people of New York and their mishaps instead of taking back his recent remarks in which he did not feel was offensive.
This is the process of the Electoral College where each candidate is trying to oppose their opponents by trying to make them look bad to the public. They can campaign by explaining all the reasons why they themselves should be president, but they also use this similar tactic to lower the public view of another candidate, therefore, still raising their absolute value. The focus is already starting to slowly drift away from Obama as election closes in beacue they are more interested in who the new president will be and how he/she will provide for the citizens of the United State. This naturally puts Obama into the lame duck position especially due to the business mogul, Donald Trump.

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/19/politics/supreme-court-obama-executive-actions-immigration/

as a part of a ruling by the supreme court to review the legality of President Obama's use of executive action on immigration, the court will not agree to consider as a whole the powers of the president in its ability to implement and interpret the laws passed by congress along with the rules regarding executive actions, orders, and regulations. The ruling will possibly have a large change in the powers and tools the president will have available depending on the final decision.
In relation to this unit, the current situation will determine exactly what the limits are or are not on the presidents powers and tools to govern. Specifically, one of the presidents strongest powers in the use of Executive orders, actions, and regulations as mentioned before, will have more clarity in how they are supposed to be used in reference to what had been discussed.

  5. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/01/obama-bully-pulpit-state-of-the-union/423258/

    http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2016/1/12/obama-to-deliver-real-state-of-the-union-as-presidency-enters-final-year.html

In the first article, the topic of the bully pulpit is discussed. Alaimo brings about the claim that the power of the bully pulpit has decreased over the years. At one point it was used to speak to a large audience of Americans, but it seems as though it is used only to persuade listeners to support the president’s positions on certain topics without anyone butting in. In addition, she notes that although many speeches are made by the president, Congress does not listen and implement everything the president offers up (especially the ideas presented in the State of the Union) and more often than not the president loses. Finally, she talks about how the only times the president speaks to the people is at the State of the Union address or when something tragic happens. Often times there are not a lot of people watching these speeches and it is left to the media to translate the president’s messages which in turn does not allow for persuasion. In the second article, it is discussed how Obama has not been able to effectively use the bully pulpit and how due to this he is entering his final State of the Union with not much ability to persuade the people. It talks about how he will be reflecting on his presidency and also making some last remarks about what he wishes to see done in the United States.

These two articles directly reflect several themes in the Presidency Unit. As President Obama enters his “lame duck” time period it is important that he reflect and use his informal powers to do whatever he wants. This is in the form of informal powers and more specifically the bully pulpit. The bully pulpit is the president’s main way of gaining support for his views and policies. By getting that visibility, the president can easily manipulate his audience to see his views and is thereby using his form of persuasion. Similar to getting the people of the United States to view him, he also uses this visibility to sort of “check” the legislative branch by influencing their decisions though the State of the Union. In conclusion, the president has many informal powers and throughout his years as president he will use them to help support his policies.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/01/12/president-obamas-state-of-the-union-speech-was-a-wholesale-rejection-of-donald-trumps-worldview/

President Obama delivered his last State of the Union speech to Congress before he steps down from his role as president. Instead of the usual policy proposals made in the past six speeches, Obama chose to discuss against the issue of Donald Trump’s vision of the United States. Trump’s name was not used; however, the president’s speech appeared to sound like it was refuting the candidate’s worldview. He called out the Republican candidates, for anti-Muslim rhetoric, which will harm the identity of the U.S. and its people. He ends the speech with a confident statement, “I believe in change because I believe in you”, receiving a standing ovation from dozens in return.
One of the president’s major jobs is being the head of state, as he represents the country in a symbolic and political way. The State of the Union speech allows the president to present certain topics and issues most important to him, and informing the public of what he is working on and his recent accomplishments. It is especially important that the president leaves a lasting impression on his last State of the Union address.

  7. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-beating-ted-cruz-in-iowa-because-of-canada-citizenship-woes-2016/

    http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/22433-congressional-report-examines-cruzs-natural-born-citizen-status

As the frenzy of the presidential campaign continues, Donald Trump's recent allegations of Ted Cruz's supposed fraudulent citizenship have proved to affect Cruz negatively in the polls. Trump brought into question Cruz's birthplace and circumstance (he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father) and therefore the validity of his citizenship. This is significant due to the constitutional requirement of anyone elected president being a "natural-born citizen". And although everyone seems to think that requirement sounds reasonable, no one is sure exactly what it means; not even constitutional lawyers. However, it's proved to scare voters enough to abstain from voting for a man who may or may not actually be allowed to be our president.

Our Constitution has been the singular most influential document on our nation since the establishment of our government, and its language is American scripture. Its requirements for eligibility for the presidency are as follows: you must be 35 years of age, a resident "within the United States" for 14 years, and a "natural-born citizen". The written requirements of eligibility of the presidency, just like any other passage in the Constitution, are not taken lightly....which makes sense: we sure haven't maintained a functional democracy for over two hundred years by ignoring the document that led to our nation's creation. Allegations of a presidential candidate not being eligible for the presidency have the potential to considerably negatively impact that candidates reputation and poll standings, as is shown in the case of Ted Cruz.

This article tells us about President Obama’s visit to a muslim mosque in baltimore on the 3rd of february. It tells that this is the first American mosque he has been to. The purpose was to “reaffirm the importance of religious freedom.” He also he said he wants to prove that America protects all faiths. During the visit he talked to many of the young muslims there and told them the very same thing. That they “fit in” here. "If you're ever wondering whether you fit in here, let me say it as clearly as I can, as President of the United States: You fit in here — right here."
It is a very nice thing Obama did here for these people. He is using his powers as the President of USA to help muslims in America feel more protected and safe. He shows that he cares for all people just by meeting them and giving them words of comfort. He is able to do this because he is the president, and people will listen to him. If any someone else had come to say these it would have been nice but not as meaningful and special as the president doing it. Because of that it is an example of bully pulpit.

    2. http://indianexpress.com/article/explained/2016-us-presidential-eloections-iowa-caucus-the-first-vote/

The first article discussed, the Republican Party nomination hopeful Donald Trump, and his performance in the Iowa caucus on Monday. The article posed the question, could the New York billionaire still be in with a shout of becoming the 45th US President this November? I personally think there is a chance he will be even if I would not vote for him myself. The second article talked in a broader sense of the Iowa caucus itself. It mentioned, that the Iowa caucus marks the start of the US presidential race, and that It is the first time that voters get to have a say in the “electioneering process” of their parties.
Both of these articles relate to our president unit, by talking about the Iowa caucuses and their effect on the voting Society of America, The Iowa caucuses act as the first representation of the American voters ideas. A caucus is a meeting of members of the legislative body to select a candidate or decide a policy. The articles are also related to this unit, by the political position of president that Donald Trump and other candidates such as Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton, are trying to be elected to.

  10. The two articles are about President Obama and his fight against gun control. The first article discusses Obama's speech on January 6 about the gun control. The president is attempting to avoid gridlock by use of an executive order. However, there has been controversy about his ability to use an executive order considering it would violate the Constitution of the United States, in particular the second amendment. President Obama plans to include many limitations to gun owners, and future gun owners. However, the real question is whether or not this act will be constitutional.
President Obama has expressed his fullest interest in avoiding gridlock and constructing some sort of gun control. Now, as often discussed in both articles, Obama plans to use executive action. He will construct an executive order that violates the very Constitution this country has been built upon. President Obama also illustrates a strong sense of bully pulpit by shedding tears during his press conference about this topic. President Obama is willing to use all of the power the president is known to have in order to create some gun control. It will be interesting to see whether Obama can power through the gridlock.

  11. Last month President Obama passed an executive order that released sanction on Iran and ended four other executive passed previously. This is complying with Nuclear deal agreed on between both the U.S. and Iran. These orders open up trade between once terrible enemies and unfreezes assets in our country that is Iranian and we can both now have foreign transaction and trade. This would bring $50 - $150 Billion dollars into Iran's economy and brings security to the United States. This is similar to what we learned in our chapter because this is the power of the president and we learned that the president can make executive orders to alter their own laws, but not change it. This is also a way to get around congress that can’t do anything and make it a lot quicker so that the deal could begin and not have to wait for congress to make up its mind and agree on it.

    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/obama-announce-new-rules-closing-gender-pay-gap-n506941

The issue being discussed in this article during the end of Obama’s administration is closing the gender pay gap. Obama’s first steps in closing this gap is retrieving information on the issue. He is looking for information that would give him more insight on discriminatory pay practices. According to the latest White House Brief, for every dollar a man was being paid, a woman was paid 79 cents for the same exact job. Paycheck Fairness Act - act in which Obama is trying to implement and get passed by Congress. This act requires business to show proof that pay gaps between a man and a woman of the same occupation are strictly for business purposes only, and not because of gender.

This relates to the topic we are learning about because President Obama is working on getting this bill passed by Congress. Obama has used executive action on many recent bills and laws of his and his administration, including this one. In class, we discuss controversial topics and cases often, and this is pretty controversial. Equal pay has been an issue for a very long time and is starting to get solved step by step more recently than not. Once this bill is officially passed by Congress, the pay gap between men and woman of an equal occupational level will be shrunken very greatly.

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/feb/10/obama-celebrates-presidency-it-unravels/

As President Obama's time as president is beginning to come to an end, he decided to return to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. The return was supposed to be a reflection of his presidency so far. During his speech, he told the audience that America has become "better off" since he became president. However, he claims that the divide between the parties has gotten worse. He says that he had trouble working with the Republican party throughout his presidency and had to use executive action a few times and would reportedly use it more if he had a solution.
One of the main jobs of the president is to faithfully execute the laws. By using executive action multiple times, some people have argued that he's not following the law because he isn't directly working with Congress. However, he has some validity to his claim that he made America better. In a video with the article, Obama talks about how he's improved the unemployment rate.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-barack-obama-springfield-speech-met-0211-20160210-story.html (1)
    http://www.marketwatch.com/story/barack-obamas-america-is-a-land-of-economic-discontent-2016-02-10 (2)

In the first article, the main point is Barack Obama’s return to Illinois to give a heartfelt speech about how politics need to return to back to civility and non-polarity between the two parties, and directly addressed an Illinois legislator who was part of creating their stalemate, and he received many cheers for his remarks on current politics. The second article talks about the inability of President Obama to convince the American people of the economic success he says he has created, and how many citizens are entirely dissatisfied with the economy.
These things relate to our unit on the presidency because they relate to the President and his ability to use the bully pulpit to advocate for their agenda. The articles show both the current President’s ability to use it well and his inability to use it well.
